By Shanea Lane Garcia Step 1: Collecting seeds You can just buy a seed from the market and then immediately proceed on germinating your seed. However, you can also collect your own seed directly from the fruit of calamansi. Avoid selecting a fruit that already has brown marks since it implies that the seed was already dry. Choose a fruit that is yellowish or has a yellow spot, indicating that it is already ripe since the seed from a ripe fruit germinates faster. Instead of usually cutting calamansi into half, cut the top part of it to avoid damaging or cutting the seed inside. Wounded seed won’t grow. You’ll only be needing the seed so extract the juice and use it for other purposes. Separate the seeds and let it dry just until the sticky layer of the seed disappears through air drying, under the sunlight, or simply damp it with cloth. Collect as many seeds as you can since there is no assurance that all of those will grow. Step 2: Germinating calamansi seeds There are two ways on how you can germinate calamansi seeds. Option a: Germinating it on tissue papers.
Step 3: Transferring the seedling
After 2 months, transfer it again on a bigger and deeper pot. By that time, your plant will be needing more amount of light so you can now put it directly under the sunlight. Also, since the nutrients inside the pot is limited, you are the one responsible on sustaining the nutrients needed by your plant. Supply the necessary type and amount of fertilizer as needed. |
